This forces the controller to take actions to enhance her authority. Otherwise, anyone can pour shit on her without pulishment. However, she has to balance out. Even she has a good reason to fire the person, does she really needs to so if the person can learn a lesson from this? She asks for your support because she didn't want to turn the whole situation into her vengeance to the person in a timely and obvious manner which will be a shame for high level persons. She probably didn't mean to drage you into this mess but she does need the words being spoken out by a third party--this is a risk for you because you won't have a safe side either way.
My best guess for this situation will be:
If the VP values a lot to your company, the CEO will imply a "no" to your boss. The process of warning the person will still go ahead without targeting at firing him. By doing this, both sides win.
If the VP wasn't a great asset to your company, kill a nobody won't hurt anybody.
